Overview
The Five-Color Pool (Wucaichi) is located in Zechawa Valley of Jiuzhaigou National Park. About 1 kilometer downhill from Long Lake, it sits at an elevation of 3,010 meters. The pool measures approximately 100 meters in length, 60 meters in width, and 6.6 meters in depth, hidden in a deep valley beneath the road.
Although it is the smallest lake in Jiuzhaigou, the Five-Color Pool is also the most visually striking. Its vivid colors rival those of the famous Five Flower Lake, earning it the poetic name “the Eye of Jiuzhaigou.”
Why the Water Shows Multiple Colors
The water of the Five-Color Pool is exceptionally clear, allowing visitors to see the textures and stone patterns on the lakebed. Differences in mineral deposits, calcium-rich sediments, and aquatic vegetation create distinct color zones within the same body of water.
As sunlight penetrates the pool, shades of deep blue, emerald green, light turquoise, yellowish brown, and even pinkish blue appear across different sections. These colors change subtly with light, weather, and viewing angle, creating a natural, ever-shifting palette.
Underground Water Source and Seasonal Stability
One of the most remarkable features of the Five-Color Pool is its stable water level throughout the year. Even during the coldest winter months, when surrounding ground freezes solid, the pool remains unfrozen and crystal clear.
This phenomenon is due to an underground water supply from Long Lake, located at a higher elevation. The subterranean water maintains a constant temperature year-round, ensuring a steady and reliable flow into the pool regardless of seasonal rainfall or drought.
Aquatic Life and Lakebed Details
The lakebed is clearly visible, revealing sharp-edged pebbles, layered rock textures, and mineral formations. Aquatic plants such as filamentous algae, stonewort, and small aquatic ferns grow beneath the surface, while reeds, horsetail plants, and rushes thrive along the shoreline.
Different chlorophyll levels in these plants interact with the calcium-rich water, producing striking variations in color within the same pool—deep blue in some areas, pale green in shallow bays, and golden or pinkish tones near flowing springs.
At midday, when sunlight shines directly overhead, gentle mountain winds or even a splash of water can create shimmering ripples reflecting golden red, golden yellow, and soft blue hues, adding to the pool’s enchanting beauty.
Surroundings and Visiting Experience
Due to its high altitude, the surrounding vegetation mainly consists of fir trees, spruce forests, and alpine shrubs. The environment is quiet and refreshing, with crisp mountain air and minimal disturbance.
Wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms allow visitors to enjoy the scenery comfortably and safely. A typical visit takes 30 to 40 minutes, yet the visual impact is profound, making the Five-Color Pool one of the highlight moments of a Jiuzhaigou itinerary.
How to Get to the Five-Color Pool
The Five-Color Pool is located in the upper section of Zechawa Valley, near Long Lake, and is usually visited together with it.
By Sightseeing Bus (Most Common Way)
After entering Jiuzhaigou National Park, take the eco-friendly sightseeing bus from the main visitor center toward Long Lake, the terminal stop of Zechawa Valley. Get off at Long Lake Station.
From there, walk approximately 10–15 minutes along the wooden boardwalk to reach the Five-Color Pool. The path is short but includes some steps.
Travel Tips for Visiting the Five-Color Pool
- Be Aware of High Altitude: At nearly 3,000 meters above sea level, some visitors may experience mild altitude discomfort such as dizziness or shortness of breath. Walk slowly, stay hydrated, and rest if necessary.
- Wear Non-Slip Walking Shoes: The area features wooden boardwalks and steps, which can be slippery after rain or in the early morning. Comfortable, non-slip shoes are strongly recommended.
- Protect the Fragile Ecosystem: The Five-Color Pool is environmentally sensitive. Do not step into the water, throw objects into the pool, or cross safety barriers for photos.
- Visit on Sunny Days for Best Colors: The pool’s colors are most vibrant under strong sunlight. Late morning to midday on clear days offers the best viewing and photography conditions.
- Plan the Visiting Order Wisely: The Five-Color Pool is best visited after Long Lake, as the two attractions are close to each other and this order saves both time and energy.
- Prepare for Changing Mountain Weather: Temperatures can vary significantly between morning and evening, even in summer. High-altitude sunlight is strong, so bring a light jacket, hat, and sunscreen.
